Welcome 2010: Another Year of Accomplishment

Keith Lakatosh, President, 248-854-8446

Well it’s another new year! Another 12 months to grow as individuals and as citizens of the world. First and foremost I would like to say thank you to the 2009 Board of Directors and members for the wonderful accomplishments of last year. As President and with a strong board behind him, Jason Matz was able to provide a wide variety of opportunities to meet people, help the community, and enhance our skills. I am fortunate to have him as my Chairman of the Board and expect him to provide a great deal of guidance as I continue the successes from last year.

This year’s board has been hard at work establishing our chapter plan and budget. I was happy to see several new projects and fundraising opportunities we have in store this year. Building on that, I would like to talk about some of the goals I have set for myself to best serve our organization this year. Some of these goals are focused on responsibilities I have and some involve empowering our members (I Mean You!) to provide the most benefit to our community and most importantly you.

Throughout this year, if I do my job effectively, you will hear me talk a lot about value. I think the most important job I have this year is to ensure that the members of this chapter receive the value from the Jaycees. The mission of the Jaycees is to “To provide young people the opportunity to develop personal and leadership skills through local community action and organizational involvement while expanding the Junior Chamber movement.” I believe this can be achieved through three broad concepts: Participate, Lead, Impact.

Participate – Aside from just showing up to events, what I mean by participate is taking advantage of the opportunities our chapter provides. There are a wide variety of people in the Rochester Jaycees. We have multicultural members, a veterinarian, techies, and even a professional goofinologist, to name a few. There are a wide variety of personalities and skills in each of our members. Also, we will be providing a host of team building exercises, competitions and guest speakers at GMMs to increase the value of our monthly meetings.

Lead – Let’s face it, no one became a leader of anything without taking charge. My opinion has always been the Jaycees are an opportunity to stretch my leadership skills without the risk of failure. Don’t get me wrong, there have been many times I have not achieved what I set out to do. However, at the end of the day, I was able to take away a lot of valuable lessons and self analysis that made me more equipped to be successful, especially when it related to my job. I strongly encourage members to run events or partner with other members to learn how to organize an event. These are skills that are highly transferable into any setting, personal or professional. I have personally known people – including myself – who have adapted the skills learned from the Chairperson’s Planning Guide (CPG) process to perform better at work, organize events outside the organization, or even start a business. Please take advantage of the opportunity and utilize the leadership opportunities in the chapter to hone these skills.

Impact – There are a variety of reason why people joined Jaycees. I know for myself one of the main reasons was to give back to the community. For anyone who has ever helped deliver Senior Easter Baskets or spent time taking a child shopping for their family at Christmas Shopping Tour, you know the enlightening feeling you get when you know you have impacted someone’s life in a positive way. I look forward to the many opportunities to impact the community and the positive effect we can have on the people within it.

I hope this provides some early-year encouragement and insight into the objectives I have for my presidency. I do not want to claim that I am here to motivate you to take advantage of the opportunities the Rochester Jaycees can provide. After all, it is up to you to determine what motivates you. I am simply here to listen and adapt to the needs of the chapter. I promise I will always be open to suggestions and appreciate feedback that can make this year a valuable experience for all of our members. Thank you and I will talk to you again soon!

Hearts for Seniors

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2010 @ 7:30 PM

Hearts for Seniors is a project in which our chapter sends our best wishes for a Happy Valentines’ Day to seniors who are recipients of the Older Person’s Center (OPC) home-delivered meals program. Many of these homebound seniors live alone and the home-delivered meals program is their only daily contact with other people. Some words of kindness and a special treat to let them know we care can make a big difference, especially on holidays.

At February’s General Membership Meeting, The Rochester Area Jaycees will assemble Valentine-themed treat bags for homebound seniors in the area. These bags will contain some sweet treats as well as Valentine greetings. The assembled bags will be delivered the next day to local homebound seniors by the OPC’s home-delivered meals drivers.

Materials are provided by the chapter and will be available at the GMM on February 11, 2010. If you have any questions, please contact project chair Kaitlin Schaefer at [email protected] or 973-960-9009.

Region F Social: Fuse Lounge

Krista Tocco, General Member

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2010 @ 6:30 PM

If you would like an evening to sit back, relax and mingle with people from all over the Northern Metro Detroit Area, you won’t want to miss this.

We will be hosting the first Region F Social of the year right here in Rochester at Fuse Lounge. What is Region F you may ask? Well, the state is divided up into Regions based on geography. The Rochester Area Jaycees are part of Region F which is comprised of all chapters north of 8 Mile Road and East of M-23, essentially 8 Mile to the tip of the thumb in Michigan. Current chapters that make up Region F are Farmington Area, Royal Oak, Madison Heights, Warren, Shores Area (St. Clair Shores/Grosse Pointe Shores), Rochester Area, Waterford, Port Huron, Flint, Grand Blanc and Fenton.

Fuse Lounge is located at 227 S. Main Street in Downtown Rochester (right next to Main Street Billiards). They have a full bar but pride themselves on their Martini Menu. Their food is also delicious consisting of a good menu of tapas style (small plates) selections. Also, if you are so inclined, Fuse is also a cigar lounge. You can bring your own or purchase them there.

If you cannot make it right at 6:30pm, don’t sweat it. Come when you can, leave when you have to. No big deal, we are there just to network, get to know one another and have fun. See you there!

Technology and Web Committee

Dan Moellering, Management VP, 231-881-4272

I would like to put together a committee to explore different possibilities for how we want to market ourselves using our website, Facebook, and other social networking sites. Also, I’d like to discuss ideas on how to better manage our CPGs, training manuals, and other paperwork to make them more accessible to our chapter. I would like to set up a date and time for the committee to meet in February. If you have ideas, even if you don’t consider yourself “tech savvy,” please consider joining this committee. If you’re interested, please email me at [email protected] and we’ll work out the best time for all committee members to meet.

What’s Your Bag?

Julia Webber, Community VP, 248-613-6875

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2010 @ 7:30 PM

Ladies, it’s time to clean out that closet and dig up those old handbags. Gentlemen, dust off that European carryall your girlfriend gave to you. These items can still be useful to the women at the Senior Center for Eastpointe. The Senior Center conducts a monthly purse swap for its members, many of whom have been using purses that are duct taped, pinned and falling apart. These women may not be able to get out to stores or don’t have the extra money to purchase a new purse.

Please bring your gently used purses to the February General Membership meeting. We will collect them and take care of getting them to the Eastpointe Senior Center. Contact project chair Julia Webber if you have any questions at [email protected] or 248-613-6875.

Model Legislature

SATURDAY, MARCH 20, 2010 - LANSING, MI

Every March, the Rochester Area Jaycees travel to Lansing to participate in the Michigan Jaycees Model Legislature project. In this project, we conduct a legislative session in the House Chamber of the Michigan State Capitol. This year, the event is scheduled for Saturday, March 20th.

We will spend the day at the Capitol learning about the legislative process through debate on actual bills currently before the legislature. You will have the opportunity to sit in the representatives’ chairs and elect your own party leaders. You’ll learn and practice parliamentary procedure and caucus as a party just like your elected officials.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to visit the floor of the Michigan House of Representatives. The Jaycees are one of only a few organizations permitted to conduct a mock legislature on the actual premises of the state capitol. Be sure to invite your friends and family to join you in taking advantage of the exclusive privilege to experience the process that creates the laws that govern us every day. Space is limited, so sign up early.

Contact project chair Dan Hauser for further details or to sign up at [email protected] or 586-703-4881.

Michigan Jaycees Career Expo Committee Opportunity

Keith Lakatosh, President, 248-854-8446

I have been approached by Laron Rosser, last year’s President of the Royal Oak Jaycees. He is looking for a member from the Rochester Area Jaycees to participate on a state committee to help organize a state-wide career expo for the Michigan Jaycees in Lansing sometime in August. I don’t have all the information yet, but if you are interested in participating on the committee, please contact me. I can provide you Laron’s contact information. Laron is a great friend and very fun to work with. If you have some spare time in your schedule this would be a great learning opportunity.

Wine and Chocolate Tasting Wrap-Up

Andrea Langhoff, Chairperson and General Member, 302-753-0136

Krista Tocco, Co-Chairperson and General Member, 586-362-3068

On Friday, January 22 several Jaycees toasted to the new year by participating in the Chocolate and Wine Night Tasting at Fieldstone Winery. Fieldstone pared a selection of six wines and six complimentary chocolates to be tasted. At one end of the winery was a table with a representative from Fieldstone Winery who was sharing a Muller Thurgau pared with a milk chocolate truffle, a Washington Riesling with a chocolate pretzel, and a Dolcetto with chocolate almonds. Through the spirited crowd was another table with a representative from the Schakolad Chocolate Factory who provided the tasters with a Shiraz with dark cinnamon chipotle chocolate, a Zinfandel with a Fieldstone Zinfandel truffle, and a White Merlot with a raspberry ganache. With each sample a description of the wine and how the chocolate accentuated the flavor was provided. The evening was filled with warm conversation, scrumptious wines and utterly delicious chocolate; we all became one step closer to becoming a connoisseur of the wine.

This tasting is offered twice per year by Fieldstone and we will keep everyone informed of the next time they are running it for those who were unable to attend.
