Jaycee Field Clean Up

Julia Webber, Community Vice President, 248-613-6875

Please join us on Saturday, June 6th at 10:00 a.m. to clean up Jaycee Field. Jaycee Field, located on Woodward Ave. in downtown Rochester, is home to a baseball diamond and a pair of basketball courts. This summer, the city will be replacing the fence and backstop, which will do a lot to enhance the look of the park. We will be contributing to its beauty by picking up litter and planting a flower bed around the sign that bears our name. This project is a great opportunity to create a clean and welcoming environment for the budding big leaguers and amateur MVPs in our community.

Volunteers are needed to help clean the park and plant the flower bed. Please come in your grubby clothes and bring your green thumbs. Donations of plants and soil are also welcome. Contact Julia Webber for more information at (248) 613-6875 or jcwimberley@comcast.net.

Extreme Badminton Cookout

Gary Coats, 248-853-5632

The Rochester Area Jaycees will be having a summer cookout at the Coats’ house on Sunday, June 28 beginning at 4PM.  We will have burgers, dogs, other snacks, pop, etc. (BYOB).  Please join us if you can make it and celebrate summer with great friends and good food.  For those interested in working up an appetite (and also working off the dinner after eating) we will also be playing Extreme Badminton!  EB is a combination of badminton (we use birds, rackets, etc.) and volleyball (you can “pass” the bird to your teammates before hitting it over the net).  The only other unusual rule about EB is that there’s no out of bounds…if the bird makes it over the net then it’s in play (unless maybe if it hits a tree or electric pole, etc.).  If it rains then we can play games inside (or play REALLY Extreme Badminton outside?).

If badminton isn’t your game then just come out for the socializing.  Even if you can only make it for a short time we’d love to see you – feel free to come late or leave early, whatever your schedule will allow.  IMPORTANT – We will also be recognizing our 2009 Rochester Area Jaycees Exhausted Roosters at this event!  Our ‘Class of 2009’ includes 4 outstanding Rochester Area Jaycees.  These 4 members have combined to give our chapter…1 senator, 2 tenth degree Jaycees (another is currently a ninth degree – there’s still time!), 3 past chapter presidents, and all 4 have been on our board multiple years.  Please come out to thank and congratulate Cheryl SatterthwaiteElspeth CoatsPam Bubnar, andDavid Silver.

Hit the Decks 2009 – Membership Social

Krista Tocco, Membership Vice President, 586-362-3068

TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 2009 @ 7:30 PM – MR. B’S

It is almost summertime and you know what that means…good food, good beverage, good company…no other reasons necessary.

It is that time of year again where we meet at a local restaurant to kick back, have some food and beverages to catch up and enjoy each other’s company. We are going to kick off our “Hit The Decks” socials this month by heading to our old favorite, Mr. B’s at 423 S Main Street in downtown Rochester. So, mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 16th at 7:30pm.

The idea of the socials, as you may have realized from the title, is to sit out on the deck/patio and enjoy the summer. If the weather’s cooperating, we will be up on the deck. Appetizers will be provided by the chapter. Additional food and drinks will be on your own. We look forward to seeing you there!

Safety Town

Pamela Bubnar, Chairman of the Board, 248-709-2631

For 31 years, The Rochester Area Jaycees have helped 4, 5, and 6 year-olds develop an understanding of safety in their environment as well as a healthy awareness of danger. The kids who go through Safety Town will begin an adventure in learning. This is accomplished by the students participating in classroom learning and safely maneuvering our miniature town – complete with cars, bikes, traffic light and signs.
Plans are now underway to organize Safety Town for 2009. If you are interested in helping us, there are various subcommittees. The subcommittees are staffing, public relations, and set-up/teardown. If you are interested in assisting with Safety Town please e-mail me at pjbbear@comcast.net.

On Sunday June 14th, we are scheduled to meet at ShurGaurd/Public Storage on Dequindre Rd at W Utica Rd (just N of M-59) at 12:30 PM. We will load Safety Town supplies into trucks and/or vans. The supplies will then be delivered to Brooklands Elementary on Auburn Rd at 1:00 PM. Set-up is scheduled from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
If you cannot attend the committee meeting but would still like to help with any aspect, please mark your calendar with the dates. Come out to Safety Town and be involved as much as your schedule permits.

Learn More about the Jaycees – Membership Info Night

Krista Tocco, Membership Vice President, 586-362-3068

We have been having tremendous success at getting to know members of our community through monthly Information Nights but we could be doing so much better. Please keep in mind that all are welcome to attend these information nights, but there is a catch. If you come on your own, you pay on your own… but if you bring a guest, I’m buyin’. Yep, that’s right, any Rochester Area Jaycee who attends with a friend who is of Jaycee age will get the beverage or treat of their choice. All guests who attend will also receive a beverage or treat as well.

For anyone interested in the organization, this is a great way to meet with a small group of Jaycees in an informal setting and ask any questions that come to mind. Please remember to spread the word to your co-workers, friends, and family that may be interested in the organization. Remember, someone extended this amazing opportunity to you so pay it forward.

Wednesday, June 10th at 7:30pm at Knapp’s Dairy Bar located at 304 S. Main Street, Rochester, MI. Join us for a good old fashion Milk Shake or Malt.
We look forward to seeing you there!
