MEET AT THE DIA – 5200 WOODWARD AVE., DETROIT

Explore Detroit like never before – behind the lens of a camera. Amateur photographer and Management VP Dan Moellering will be your photography instructor for the day. He’ll give you tips and tricks on composition, lighting, exposure, and speed for capturing the best shots. Please bring your camera with you or let us know if you need to borrow a camera. Also, if you’re interested in using a film camera, you’re welcome to borrow our Canon Rebel SLR or use your own if you have one. We’ll meet at the DIA in the main surface lot behind the museum. We can arrange car pools for those interested, as well.

There will also be a follow up event in July for those interested. We’ll be assembling scrapbooks of our Detroit photos (or other photos if you prefer) and learning calligraphy for embellishing the scrapbook. That event will be July 15th at 6:30 at the Rochester Chamber of Commerce. I’ll put out an article in July’s Heartbeat with more information.

Please email me at jmoellering@rochesterareajaycees.org or Dan at dmoellering@rochesterareajaycees.org if you’re interested in joining us or if you’d like more information on the photo shoot and/or the scrapbooking/calligraphy event.

PUBLIC STORAGE, 2100 WEST UTICA RD., SHELBY TOWNSHIP

BROOKLANDS ELEMENTARY, 490 E. AUBURN RD., ROCHESTER HILLS

For 32 years, the Rochester Area Jaycees have helped teach 4, 5, and 6-year-olds to develop an understanding of safety in their environment as well as a healthy awareness of danger. The kids that go through Safety Town will begin an adventure in learning. This is accomplished by the students participating in classroom learning and safely maneuvering our miniature town — complete with cars, bikes, traffic lights, and signs.

On Friday, June 18th, we are scheduled to meet at Public Storage on Dequindre Rd. at W. Utica Rd. at 12:30. We will load Safety Town supplies into trucks and vans. The supplies will then be delivered to Brooklands Elementary on Auburn Rd. at 1:00 PM. Setup is scheduled from 1:00-3:00. Any and all assistance is welcome. Please contact Julia Webber for more information or to get involved.

HART MIDDLE SCHOOL, 6500 SHELDON RD, ROCHESTER HILLS

The Jaycees are proud to once again join in the “Race to Beat Cancer” by participating in the Greater Rochester Area Relay for Life. The 24 hour event kicks of at 9:00am on Saturday, June 26 and continues through the night until 9:00am on Sunday, June 27. The American Cancer Society expresses that “the Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.” At this year’s relay the Rochester Area Jaycees Team will join over 40 other teams at Hart Middle School in raising funds and awareness for cancer.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Relay for Life, please note that is not just a 24 hour walk, it’s a celebration! There are games and entertainment for people of all ages; themed walks, family friendly activities and much, much more. One of the most inspirational and moving parts of the event is the Luminaria Ceremony. The ceremony is a special part of the night that occurs when the sun sets and the track will be lit by the glow of illuminated bags called luminaria, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer. Some celebrate cancer survivors, while others help us honor and remember those gone too soon. All represent someone special who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in their honor.

Here are the standings so far:

Chapters Involved ___________ Amount Collected
Farmington Area——————— $(-19.08)
Royal Oak —————————–$38.68
Waterford ——————————$(-10.79)
Madison Heights ——————–$2.43
Port Huron ————————— $(-4.94)
Rochester Area ———————$(-23.65)
Shores Area ————————- $(-2.97)
Warren ——————————– $(-11.75)

Grand Total raised $329.66

Continuing until the August convention (August 13th), we will be at WAR… PENNY WAR! Here is a reminder of how it works:

1. Eric will be collecting change at our monthly General Membership Meetings.

2. We increase our score based on the number of pennies we collect.

3. For “silver” change, we DO NOT gain points, but we get to reduce the score of another chapter in the region, They are: Farmington, Madison Heights, Port Huron, Royal Oak, Shores Area, Warren, and Waterford

4. Paper bills will be accepted, but will not count towards total points.

5. The chapter that has the highest score (or least lowest) at the end wins the war.

So what do we win? Aside from Bragging rights, Eric has offered the winning chapter the opportunity to exploit his knowledge and time for up to two projects for the chapter. As you know this can be very helpful for us, considering the amount of manpower required for events like Haunted House and Christmas Shopping Tour. Let’s show the region how good we are at raising funds for a good cause!
