Embodying the line of the Jaycee Creed that states, “Service to humanity is the best work of life,” this area develops the sensitivity of individual members to societal problems, and knowledge of community dynamics in solving these problems through actual experience. Like all citizens, Junior Chamber members have a stake in the betterment of their communities: The Commissions under Community are as follows:
Community Service Commission: Projects under this commission are designed to promote or improve the quality of life for people in the community. This would include projects dealing directly with people (i.e. elderly assistance, mental health & retardation, and health safety). Other projects might involve properties, economic development, energy and environmental issues.
Community Fundraising Commission: This commission would deal with direct fundraising for specific, non Jaycee programs. It would include local disaster, emergency assistance, health-related organizations, foundations or other organized community charities.
Government & Civic Involvement Commission: Projects in this area focus on all areas of involvement with the local, state, and national governmental process. Projects might include town forums, debates, “Get Out the Vote,” advocacy issues, criminal justice projects as well as involvement/assistance to other civic organizations in the community (except fundraising).
Children & Youth Commission: This commission’s responsibility is to promote and coordinate projects relating to children and youth. As the future of communities lies in the hand of today’s young people, project should be conducted to ensure that young people are prepared to take community leadership roles in the years to come.
Safety Town - We facilitate a summer program for children between the ages of 4 - 6 years old to come and learn how to be safe around their home.
Christmas Shopping Tour - We solicit donations from the community and take underprivileged children shopping to buy gifts for the family. Afterwards, there is a party for the children and Santa gives them presents.
Kid Care ID - Children put together a packet to help identify them incase they go missing. We include their description, a picture of them, and finger prints.
Senior Easter Baskets - At Easter time we put together goody baskets for area seniors and deliver them.
Model Legislature - Once a year we have an opportunity to go to Lansing and get a close up look at how our government operates. We actually get to go through mock debates of how a new law is enacted in the same place our elected officials do it.
And many more!
